Beach soccer is football played on the sand. In recent years football on the sand has been recognized by FIFA and competitions have been held at national and international levels.
The official regulations have 18 rules (similar to those of football and five-a side football). The main concepts are:

• a team consists of 5 players including the goalkeeper; the bench consists of 3/5 players
• there may be an unlimited number of substitutions
• two referees
• there are 3 periods of 12 minutes each with 3-minute intervals between each period
• the match cannot end in a draw: there are 3 minutes of extra time with Golden Goal and if necessary penalties
• the free kicks are always direct, without a barrier and must be taken by the player who sustained the foul
• unlike football, the goalkeeper may catch the ball with his hands on an intentional back pass from a player of his team
• it is played without shoes
