Dodgeball (literally dodge ball) is a team sport which evolved into a competitive game from the common game of palla prigioniera (tag). It is played in teams of six against six with five rubber balls like those used in minivolleyball or other similar balls. At the beginning of the game the balls are positioned on the half way line in a metre wide neutral zone called the Dead Zone, while the players stand behind their own baseline ready, when the referee starts the game, to grab as many balls as possible before the opponents do the same.
It is played on a court which is 9 m x 18 m (the same size as a volleyball court). The objective of the game is to eliminate all of the opposing team without being eliminated. A player is eliminated if:
- he enters the opponents zone or the dead zone
- is hit by a ball thrown by an opponent
- the ball he launches is blocked in mid air by an opponent
- he leaves the court in order to avoid or make an attack
