Beach tennis, also known as tennis on the beach is a sport which was invented in Italy and originated with racchettoni. It was played on Italian beaches in the early years of the last century with a tambourine. After World War II, people began playing the game with a bat like the one used in paddle tennis or rather with a flat wooden or plastic board instead of strings; currently the most popular materials for the construction of the bats are fibreglass, carbon and kevlar. As well as the first Italian players, the Israelis and Brazilians are also among the pioneers of this sport: in Israel it is called matkot and is considered the national sport while in Brazil it is called frescobol.

The first beach tennis tournaments with the current rules, but with a volleyball scoring system, were played on the beaches of Ravenna which has had a strong volleyball tradition since 1978. As there is no federation, which while inhibiting investment in terms of advertising by large companies also means the extent of its popularity in Italy is difficult to quantify, it is without doubt the predominant sport in the summer along the coastline of Ravenna and Ferrara as well as being popular in the area of Rimini and Riccione; it is estimated that along the coast of Emilia Romagna there are about 50% of the courts of the whole Italian championship. The first Italian championship organized by the IFBT took place in 1997.

It is easy for anyone to play but it becomes extremely difficult and spectacular the higher the level of the players. In order to shine in beach tennis the player must have a good relationship with the equipment, reflexes and speed on the sand. In general the balance between these qualities leads players with fair tennis skills and physical characteristics to emerge favouring quick reactions rather than just pure power.
