Footvolley

Footvolley

This game was officially created on the beaches of Copacabana in Brazil in the early sixties. It seems that the reason for this was the ban placed by the local police on playing with a ball on the sand. Some fans used an improvised structure consisting of two poles and a rope on the ground next to the beach and began to kick the ball with their feet using beach volleyball rules.

Today, 40 years later, footvolley is the most popular beach sport in Brazil, played by thousands of people and, because of its peculiarities, these include famous Brazilian soccer players like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho who among others finance their own annual tournaments. There are now so many fans that it became necessary to build small permanent beach stadiums where tournaments are held daily from dawn to dusk. There is another possible version of the origins of footvolley dating back to 1940 and perhaps even earlier. It appears that Fulvio Bernardini trained and coached his players with a game similar to today’s footvolley which at the time was called calcio al volo. There is evidence of this in articles from daily Roman newspapers of that time. The ball can be hit with almost any part of the body except for the hands or arms. At a competitive level, the competitions are held in doubles or rather 2 against 2. The other rules are similar to beach volleyball and Jianzi.
