The handbike is a special bicycle in which the thrust comes from the arms and not the legs. A three wheeler bike is used and allows the disabled athlete who is in a wheelchair or has walking difficulties to play by powering the bike by “riding” with their hands; it also has gears which means it can cope with steep slopes and reach high speeds. There are national and international competitions, divided into categories depending on the severity of the physical disability of the athlete.
