Riviera Beach Games 2011 - Sport

Handbike

The handbike is a special bicycle in which the thrust comes from the arms and not the legs. A three wheeler bike is used and allows the disabled athlete who is in a wheelchair or has walking difficulties to play by powering the bike by “riding” with their hands.

Peteca

This game has Brazilian indigenous origins. Even before the arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil this game was used during celebrations and festivities and the Indios believed it was the game of the gods. The objective of the game is to hit the peteca with your hands over a net that divides the court. The peteca is made of rubber with feathers to help it fly.

Stand Up Paddling

Stand Up Paddling is an ancient form of surfing. It can be traced as far back as ancient Polynesia. It combines the classic surfboard with paddles with the rider paddling the board standing up as the waves help the board go faster. It is a crossover sport that can be practiced even if there are no waves or wind.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball (literally dodge ball) is a team sport which evolved into a competitive game from the common game of palla prigioniera (tag). It is played in teams of six against six with five rubber balls like those used in minivolleyball or other similar balls.

Sparring Vlup

The objective of the game is to send the ball over the sparring net making it bounce on the surface which is perpendicular to the ground, trying to get it into the opponent’s side. Each player must have the same kind of racket, a beach tennis racket, a tennis racket or some other type with which they will hit the ball.

Kitesurfing

This is a relatively new sport which was created in around 1999 in the hot, windy waters of Hawaii. It is without doubt the fastest growing water sport of the moment. The kite surfer uses a specific type of board and a kite (kite or wing).
